Flowering Plants

  • Rafflesia spp.
Rafflesia, a genus of parasitic flowering plants, is one of the iconic natural tropical plant species that is used by the tourism authority to identify Malaysia. It was found in Compartment 49 Pasir Raja Selatan Forest Reserve. A highly sought-after medicinal plant amongst natives and local population, Rafflesia is becoming a rare and endangered species through over exploitation. Its reproductive biology is still not fully understood yet, and so, the site has been protected and efforts are being taken by KPKKT to propagate the species and prevent it from becoming extinct.

  • Orchids

Orchidaceae (or Orchid family) is the largest family of the flowering plants (Angiospermae). With more than 25,000 species recorded to date and more new species being discovered and described across the world, the beauty and variety of orchid species is unmatched in the plant kingdom.

Over the years, the collection of orchids farm the wild had caused great concern to conservationist. The threat to its survival has triggered international efforts to protect wild orchid species from extinction from over-collection and illegal trade across the country of origin, and destruction of its habitat.

Terengganu is no exception to these threats and conservation efforts have been made to ensure that wild orchids continue to mesmerize everyone. KPKKT is committed towards helping the government's efforts to preserve this priceless treasure for the benefit of the future generation.
