HCVF reconnaissance and saltlick survey in KPKKT forest concession, Terengganu

A preliminary survey of saltlick and HCVF reconnaissance has been held in KPKKT forest concession by Worldwide Fund For Nature (WWF) Malaysia from 30th March to 2nd April 2009. This survey was a preparation for a HCVF assessment and toolkit field-testing at KPKKT FMU, it is to identify suitable camera-trapping sites and to survey locations of potential saltlicks. The area targeted for this survey, Pasir Raja Forest Reserve, was identified based on consultations with local villagers who reported the presence of at least 2 saltlicks there. Also, based on results from previous surveys and expeditions carried out by others, the Forest Conservation team felt that this area would be a good starting point to survey first. The team is accompanied by 1 Miss Ummi Ainul Hafizah and Mr Rosdi Mohd Ali from KPKKT, Miss Sheema Abd Aziz and Miss Miss Audrey Lee Mei Fong from Forest Conservation team from WWF and two hired guides from Kampung Pasir Raja, who had been to the saltlicks about 10 years previously, had been successful in locating the sites again the previous week, and were able to guide us in the forest to find the saltlicks again. Because the sites in question were not accessible by vehicles, we were required to trek in on foot, carrying supplies for 2 nights’ camping stay in the forest. From this survey, two saltlicks and two animals’ pools has been located. However, these areas are not within KPKKT and cannot be recommended as HCVF area for KPKKT.
